“used to shine” also affirms Daniel W Brown “forth from his [mother Amina, peace be unto her] by which she could see castle of Busra in Syria. On the eve of his birth, a Jew in Yathrib was overheard announcing to his fellow Jews: ‘Tonight has risen a Star under which Ahmed (on whom be peace) is to be born'” (New Introduction to Islam, Blackwell Publishing, NY, Oct 1, 2003, p.71).
Sayyadana Ibn-e-Abbas (ALLAH be pleased with him) says in the commentary of the verse 35 from chapter 24: Surah Noor of the Holy Quran: “The similitude of the Noor (Light) of ALLAH is Noor (light) of the Holy Prophet (ALLAH’s Grace and Peace Be Upon Him)” – (Tafseer-e-Ibne Abbas, page: 372).
Sahl ibn Abdullah in his Tustari also writes, “The light of Muhammad (Peace Be Unto Him) when it is lodged in the lions…it is as if it were a glittering star because of belief and wisdom it contains, kindled from a blessed tree, i.e. from the light of Abraham. He [ALLAH] makes a comparison with the blessed tree and He says, “Its oil would nearly shine, i.e. Muhammad’s (on whom be peace) prophecy is almost evident to the people before he speaks, just like this oil.”
In the Holy Quran, ALLAH calls His Prophet a light and a light-giving lamp. He says, “A Light and a Clear Book have come to you from ALLAH” – (5:15). ALLAH further says to his beloved Prophet Muhammad (on whom be peace): “O Prophet! We have sent you as a witness, a bearer of good tidings and of warning, as a caller to ALLAH by His leave and as an illuminating lamp” – (33:45-46).
We are to understand that He made the Prophet’s (on whom be peace) light more powerful than the sun, and yet more cool and gentle than the moon. As some of the Prophet’s (on whom be peace) companions were given to see this light as even brighter than both the sun and the moon, for when they walked with him they noticed that he cast no shadow on the ground (Al-Hakim al-Trimidhi). Those who saw him in the full moon noticed that his blessed face was more brighter than the moon (Al-Trimidhi). As Rubayyi (Radi ALLAH anhu) reported to have said to his son: “My son, had you seen him, you would have seen the sun shining” – (Al-Trimidhi).
The light of the Prophet Muhammad (on whom be peace) shone at all levels, it filled the material, intermediary and spiritual worlds, dispelled the darkness of ignorance and disbelief, and is destined to shine forever.
The companion of Prophet, Anas ibn Malik, (may ALLAH be pleased with him) described how, “When the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), first entered Medina, everything in Medina became illuminated, then how, when he passed away and was buried in the house of the holy mother of faithful believers, Sayyidah Aisha (may ALLAH be pleased with her) the light disappeared” – (Ahmad and ibn Majah).
The uncle of Prophet, Sayyadana Abbas (may ALLAH be pleased with him), praised him with a poem, on his return from the Tabuk expedition, saying: “You, when you were born, the earth was lit, And with your light so was the sky” – (Mostafa al-Badawi. The Light of the Prophet (on whom be peace), USA, 2001).
